Project 4
Project description

In 1862, Ludwig von Köchel published a catalog of the musical works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), in which he attempted to assign numbers to Mozart's works in chronological order of composition. These numbers are now called Köchel numbers, abbreviated K or KV. The exact dates of many of Mozart's works were unknown at the time (as some still remain), and Köchel's catalogue has been revised based on later musicological evidence. Both Köchel's original numbers and those of subsequent revisions are used today to refer to works by Mozart.

In this project, use Köchel's original numbers as given in this data set to develop a simple method of estimating when a composition by Mozart was completed based on its Köchel number. Using the composition completion dates given in this data set, assess the accuracy of Köchel's original numbers as a chronological ordering of Mozart's works.

Background on the data set

This data set consists of a nearly complete catalog of Mozart's works given by original Köchel number, along with the year of completion of each, taken from the Mozart article in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd edition, 1998 reprint). Cases where dates are conjectural or approximate are included without any particular indication. For compositions in which a range of years is conjectured in the article, the last year is consistently used in this data set. The order in which the observations occur follows the order of the New Grove article, which is grouped by composition type.

Compositions that were originally assigned to an appendix of the Köchel catalog are not included in this data set. Also, compositions for which no date of completion is known or even conjectured in the article are not included in this data set.
